The 101
Four things every family should understand before the result comes out — because the families who understand them early are the ones who don't panic later.
Government medical seats are split two ways: 15% All India Quota (AIQ), open to everyone through central counselling, and 85% state quota, reserved for candidates of that state. You can — and usually should — participate in both at the same time.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counselling for AIQ, deemed and central universities. Each state runs its own counselling for the 85% state-quota and private seats. AYUSH courses (BAMS, BHMS and more) have their own separate counselling.
Counselling moves in rounds — typically Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and stray-vacancy rounds. In each, you register, fill and lock college choices, and a seat is allotted by rank, category and preference order. When you can exit freely and when it costs you differs by round.
Scorecard, admit card, Class 10 & 12 marksheets, ID, and category or domicile certificates where they apply — verification is strict and windows are short. Half of good counselling is simply having every document ready before the portal opens.

Lakhs of students clear NEET every year, but there are far fewer MBBS seats than qualified candidates — which makes counselling, not the exam, the stage where medical futures are actually decided. Two students with the same score routinely end up at very different colleges, purely because one filled choices strategically across AIQ and state quota and the other didn't. BDS, AYUSH programmes, nursing, pharmacy and allied health sciences all lead to real healthcare careers — and for some students, a structured repeat year is genuinely the right call.
