Getting confused between the two courses Hospital management and Healthcare Management can be very easy as dealing with one is quite similar to dealing with the other one. Here, we shall clear the doubts and tell you how the two of them are significantly different. Also, we will refer to some of the courses that you can pursue in these fields to give you an in-depth knowledge about how to go on about segregating the choices and choosing what is best for you.
Take here: Courses in Clinical Research, Healthcare Management and Hospital Management from ICRI – A top institution in India for the mentioned fields
Firstly, let us refer to Hospital Management
If you love medicine and want to pursue a job in which you get to meet people and diagnose them as well as treat them, hospital management is not for you. This is quite different than being a doctor who actually carries out those functions. Also, you can be a healthcare manager in case you want to do that stuff. Hospital Management course is somewhat similar to a hotel management course, the only difference being a hospital is managed in one case and a hotel is managed in the other case. When you become a Hospital Manager, you will have the primary responsibility to look for the funds that your hospital receives and also how does it spend it. For example, if your hospital requires a new MRI machine, you will be the one to sanction the funds for the machine. Also, in case the hospital is lacking nurses or a particular specialist doctor, the Human Resource department which comes under your supervision will be responsible for carrying out the recruitment process.
One of the major tasks that you will have as a Hospital manager will be to ensure that your hospital has a good name and reputation. This means that you will be also responsible for handling the lawsuits or malpractice complaints against the hospital or the doctors of the hospital, with the aid of the legal department of the hospital or an external source. You will be the face of the hospital and hence people coming in or going out of the hospital will know you as the hospital manager as well as they know their doctors who are responsible for carrying out their treatments.
You will lead the hospital in a way and carry out all the non-medical procedures of the hospital. This means that it is completely fine if you do not possess a doctorate degree yourself. However, to be a hospital manager, you will need certain qualifications and those can be achieved by going to a certain B-school (Business management institute).
Another primary function that you will need to carry out will be to ensure that your hospital also gets all kind of support from the nearby community whenever needed.
Healthcare management is a field that is quite similar to being a doctor or a nurse. In this field, you get to meet people, diagnose them as well as suggest them the proper measures to get their health right. Healthcare management is a course that is closely related to being a professional doctor but in a subtly different way.
In a way, healthcare management can be considered a position that comes under the position of a Hospital Manager. The hospital manager deals with the problems associated with the hospital as a whole while a healthcare manager is more inclined towards dealing with the day to day problems that might occur within the hospital. For example, a new MRI machine to be bought can be brought to the attention of the hospital manager by the healthcare manager and hence the process be carried out. So, in a way, the healthcare manager answers to the hospital manager.
Another example of the duty of a health care manager includes solving day to day issues. If a crash-cart goes missing or a much-needed hospital employee is unable to turn up due to bad weather, the healthcare manager is responsible for managing the replacement in time to save a patient’s life. Healthcare management also includes taking care of the pharmacy of the place and make sure that it is always stacked with the required devices and medicines, as well as all the resources required by the hospital in terms of electricity and other facilities.
