You will have to choose M.Tech+Ph.D. degree at least after your engineering degree to become a researcher in Material Science. You have to apply for M.Tech or M.Tech+Ph.D. dual degree. Please prepare yourself for a good GATE/NET score so that you will be eligible for a Fellowship (UGC/DBT/CSIR/DST/JRF-SRF) /Teaching Assistance-ship (mostly in IITs) during your research. You can apply for M.Tech or M.Tech+Ph.D. dual degree even without GATE/NET score. Many good ranked autonomous deemed universities have their own entrance exams for fellowship as well as for admission.
You have to keep the updates about the entrance exams and admissions for the college/University/Research labs you desired to apply individually. Another option is after completing your M.Tech degree you can join as a JRF/Project Assistance(PA) in a sponsored project at any college/Research Labs/Universities. Generally after completing two years of JRF/PA you can enroll for Ph.D. The advertisement for JRF/PA will be published on the respective website of colleges/Universities/Research labs.
After completion of your Ph.D. degree you can apply for a post-doctoral research in India or abroad with good fellowship. You can work as Research Assistance/Research Scientist in a sponsored project in any research lab/University also you can work as a Research Scientist in a reputed Research lab/Research and Development (R&D) Lab of an good Industry.
