Below is the list of the personal and professional skills that you will require if you want to work as a professor in your respective field of interest:

1. You need to have extremely good understanding of the subject that you are practicing. This is the most fundamental criteria for the role of a professor. Without the sound understanding of the subject, one cannot survive in this profession.

2. You need to be a very good researcher. This is usually the entry level criteria for the role of a professor. You need to conduct the research in your area of interest. And not only the core research but also in day to day lectures, you need to prepare them well with the right amount of research behind your lectures so that you pass the right information to the students.

3. You need to have extremely good communication skills so that there is no scope of communication gap in you and your listeners. This is an extremely important part of teaching that you communicate your thoughts and ideas clearly to the other students. That way only they can learn and get benefited from your teaching.

4. You need to have the right amount of patience so that you deal with the queries and doubts of the students with ease and confidence. This is the only way in order to succeed in the long terms in your career as a professor.

5. The time management skills should be of utmost level if you want to work as a professor. The time has to be divided accurately in various activities and you need to plan each lecture well. You need to finish right on time in order to provide the maximum value in minimum time.

6. As a professor you need to constantly work with other professors and many other staff members. You need to be really good at your interpersonal skills. Also you need to know how to get things done in an institutional setting. This will be an effective skill to survive in the academic world.

Dear Aspirant, to be a successful professor, anyone definitely needs excellent personal and professional skills. The personal skills refers to the ability to manage your personal reactions to responsibilities and challenges in professional work and personal life. This involves managing your time and adapting to changing situations. Or we may also say that personal skills are the abilities, which are learnt in peoples works or affairs but can also be put into practice in other circumstance, for example communication, teamwork, leadership and above all problem solving. From these line now it may be some what clear to you that to become a successful Professor the Personal skills are very important. The personal skills also integrate self management, which is the ability to manage your personal reactions and challenges in life.

Let me give example here to explain it more clearly; if a person is not self managed, unable to control personal reactions, and is a bad listener, can he or she be a good and successful Professor?? The answer is obvious. A professor has to be a good listener, be patient and analytical to answer the queries of his or her students.

Lets come to another quality that is Professional skill for a professor. The professional skills included the professional qualification. It includes the minimum qualification to become a professor, it could be in some cases a masters degree or a doctoral degree. In most of the cases the doctoral degree is a must that too with some other qualification such as NET certificate (this is required to get entry in colleges and universities as Lecturer or Assistant Professor).

As professional you should be well verse with your subjects, you have to explain the subjects to your students in such a simple way. so that they should not forget id long life. You have to quote some examples while teaching and also correlate with some practical aspect.

Another thing as professional qualification in a professor is research abilities. A professor has to guide masters and doctoral degree students. That's why you have to read modern literature related to your subject, what work has been done, and what work is going on in any corner of the world. Keeping this thing in mind, you have to device your research, that should have some novelty in it and also have some practical application.

I wish you very good luck....

Dear Aspirant

Thank you very much for contacting CareerGuide.com which works for your purpose 24x7. Asking question about personal and prfessional skills makes you visible in terms of non-academic background. My dear friend personal behavior and professiona skills are just like the oxygen moleculaes in water without this compnent you can not imagine anything in life even thes social life needs such skills to interact forget the eligent job like professor and other executive positions. First we need to develop our outlook which is possible when you see the different elite socities at regional level, state level, national level and international level. We are far behind in terms of professional art which is common by a large so first we need to groom ourselves for the basic instinct to be required at school and college lebel. What we think that we will do in future when after passing the exams and degrees while exploring the jobs. I mean to say that we leave everything in future tense where our academic system is now having eye-opener system and again trying to commit the mistake by following the other countries (developed) benchmarking that is not an acceptible trend at our perspective. Though we have different socio-economic dynamics, diverse culture and diferent relegious background then how come we talk about that our basic could be transformed by uniform norms I am confused at this level and feel helpless. Moreover I will suggest you the following points before concluding that these skills are associated with our upbringing which can not be developed in three months or three years by attending any councelling session or workshop.

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com here. Your question is one of its kind and definitely worth time to talk about. A professor is a high status profession and it is also very reputable, recognisable and highly responsible position in career. I will first explain on personal skills and then talk about professional skills needed to become a professor.

Personal skills: As personal skills, a professor needs to have excellent teaching skills, creative teaching skills, excellent presentation skills and most importantly writing skills. A professor should know how to write his research reports precisely and to the point.

Professional skills:
  • excellent academic record - You need to have a very good or even an excellent academic record in your school level. This is the basic level that will help you to start studying at a very good college for a good degree too. If you maintain and develop the right kind of studying aptitude since schooling, it will reflect in your academics all through your college and university level.
  • Very good bachelors degree - You should complete a bachelors degree with a very good percentage although a minimum first class is highly essential. Only a minimum 60% will qualify you for higher studies and it is necessary to develop this score since Bsc or BE/ BTech leevel itself.
  • very good masters degree - Like doing a bachelors degree a very good masters degree is also highly essential. Only when students get a minimum 60% they would be qualified to work as a lecturer or even be eligible for further studies like the doctorate degree.
  • UGC NET - this is an imporatnt competitive exam than a professor needs to write to become one. UGC NET will qualify a person for both studying a PhD as well as becoming a professor.
  • Other professional exams - You can also write other national qualifying exams similat to UGC NET like UGC SET for state level, UGC CSIR, UGC LEC and UGC JRF. all these national qualifications will prove useful to a professor professionally.
  • PhD degree - Above all a professor needs to have completed a phD degree for sure. Without a PhD, one can only work as a lecturer. As i mentioned above, to study a PhD, good academic scores since schooling, bachelors, masters, UGC NET are mandatory.
  • Research skills - a professor needs to take part in academic research vigorously. This means apart from teaching students they should also do research compulsorily.
