Generally a Graphic designer loves to and should be indeondently functioning.
But not until you have gained experience and have made good contacts.
Since, Graphic designing is into Brochures, or any form of printing, or rather helping new entrepreneurs promote their business by making flyers, as well as business cards.Please note that though we hear of an increase in entrepreneurship, but still they are not very much in the market. At the same time, not many entrepreneurs would be able to hire a Graphic designer for their promotions and printing purposes.
Mostly businessmen or new startups are in need of Graphic designers. Thus if you have worked in the industry, made a name for yourself and few people who were your clients are happy with your work, maintain these contacts.As they would be helpful, when you begin on your own.
In terms of self promotion, you can then tie-up with printing shops, card printers, cybercafes etc.
